Hello,

We were at Sherbrooke, in Nottingham this weekend, where the 4th Carlton put on a fantastic campfire that we were invited to join. (thanks if anyone from there reads this)
There were a couple of new songs that my Cubs are now bugging me to sing, the thing is none of us can remember the words or music!

The first one had the chorus of ' right, right, kick up the bum, right, right, left. Left left, poke in the eye, left, left, right.

And the other one I think was called Farmer Leary's Cow. it had a bit where the campfire circle was split in to 4 each one with there own bit - FIRE FIRE FIRE, POUR ON WATER, POUR ON WATER, SAVE MY CHILDREN SAVE MY CHILDREN, JUMP LADY, JUMP.

If any one can help that would be fantastic!

Liz

28. Hot Time in the Old Town…

The Chorus is a round. Separate the pack into 4 groups:
Group 1: (yells) fire, fire, fire, fire!
Group 2: (yells) Pour on water, pour on water!
Group 3: (yells) Save my children! Save my children!
Group 4: (yells) Jump lady Jump
Four nights ago, when we were all in bed,
Old Mother Leary put a lantern in the shed,
And when the cow kicked it over,
She winked her eye and said,
“There’ll be a hot time in the old town tonight!” chorus
3 nights ago etc…chorus
2 nights ago etc…chorus:
1 night ago etc… chorus
Late last night etc…chorus

Had not heard it with those words, will have to give it a try. I've always heard it as a single verse song:
One dark night, when we were all in bed,
Old Mother Leary put a lantern in the shed,
And when the cow kicked it over,
She winked her eye and said,
“There’ll be a hot time in the old town tonight!”
Cheer boys cheer, the school is burning down,
Cheer boys cheer, it's burning to the ground
Cheer boys cheer, it's the only school in town
There'll be a hot time in the old town tonight.

For those who do not recognize the references it is about the Great Chicago Fire that destroyed most of the city of Chicago and was supposedly started in the shed of a Mrs O'Leary.

The Song your after is Captain Jack!
Several variations on this one via Google

Oh oh Captain Jack
meet me down the railroad track
With a necker in your hand
You can be my Scouting man
Go right, Go left, Go kick him up the bum, Go right, Go left. Go Right!
Go Left Go Right, Go Poke him in the eye, Go left, Go right, Go Left

oh oh Captain Jack
Meet me down by the railroad track
With a compass in your hand
You can be my tracking man
Go right, Go left, Go kick him up the bum, Go right, Go left. Go Right!
Go Left Go Right, Go Poke him in the eye, Go left, Go right, Go Left

oh oh Captain Jack
Meet me down by the railroad track
With a bible in your hand
You can be my preaching man
Go right, Go left, Go kick him up the bum, Go right, Go left. Go Right!
Go Left Go Right, Go Poke him in the eye, Go left, Go right, Go Left

Did Nev (Camp Warden) do Cecil the Spider. Its his trademark thing and all the other leaders that I know who have done the camp fire leaders course refuse to do it as its his thing.

Also as far I know we have always sung "old farmer leary" as opposed to "mother leary".

NB. choruses vary...

here's ours:

4. You'll Never Get To Heaven

Oh you'll never get to Heaven (repeat)
In a rocking chair (repeat)
'Cos the Lord don't like (repeat)
No rocking there. (repeat)
(Then sing through again)

chorus
I ain't gonna grieve my Lord
I ain't gonna grieve my Lord
I ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more no more.
(Other verses are then made up by other people)
Examples:
On the 227, coz the 227
Don’t go to heaven

In a biscuit tin, coz a biscuit tin’s
Got biscuits in.

On roller skates, coz you'll skate right past Those Pearly Gates.
In someone’s car, coz someone’s car Won't get that far.

i also know a chorus:

oh i ain't gonna grieve... my lord no more
i ain't gonna spit, i ain't gonna swear
i ain't gonna (gasp) you wouldn't dare!
oh i ain't gonn agrieve... my lord no more

cheers. best verse i know of is,

In Raksha's Bra, caus Raksha's Bra won't stretch that far.

although only works if the leader is female and you have a raksha.
