Yes, most round here do keep to the school terms.

A suggestion I saw here on was to run longer in the summer when the weather is good and have a longer christmas / new year break when the weather is pants.

I put this idea to our scout troop over breakfast last weekend and it was very acceptable to them.

So this year we will start back in the second week of Jan and have our end of term camp the weekend of the state school breakup and our bring a friend - get wet - sausage sizzle during the school holibobs.

sounds good to me...

Summer Break

These being my 1st year as SL, having taken over at Easter, and only have a small troop at present (9), I have maintained the status quo as far as summer break goes. Next year, however, looking to camp or meet over the hols.

Did try meeting through the School breaks, but we found it a waste of time as more than 75% did not turn up. It is important that Leaders have a braek also.

Break

I don't think I would meet every week as normal - maybe a camp and an odd evening/weekend activity.

We don't run during the holidays, but very occasionally we have the odd event before the break, other than that we go back in September.

Our Beavers and Scouts close for the summer, but Cubs carries on in an informal sort of way - no uniform, finishing later than normal. Numbers are way down, of course. We tend to have 2 or 3 ideas of what we'd like to do with the evening, then decide what we're going to do when we see who turns up. We get to do some good stuff with the 8 or 15 Cubs that come that we wouldn't try to do with the full Pack.

I don't understand this argument that 'numbers will be low so it's not worth it'. If you measure 'worth' in joy rather than in numbers it's worth it.

We do, with a less formal style of meeting - no inspection, not bothered about uniform (though most still wear it) and no points competition. We tend to get about 10-12 out of about 20-something in the Troop.

We do something fairly similar. Although some Scouts are on holiday, we still get enough to run a worthwhile evening.

Most of our leaders being teachers, we have a well deserved break!

Saying that we usually run a cub summer camp and the scouts shall be off to norjam next week.

We generally only meet during term time. However we are meeting this week for a family walk and BBQ.
Then next weekend is a camp.
We were going to start back a week early too but changed plans as that would of meant our Monday pack starting back on the bank holiday

This summer and last we stopped for the 6 weeks holiday but still have Scout summer camp. What we did have though is 3 extra evenings off carnival preparation to bridge the gap between the last week of term and Eastleigh Carnival. We won our category last year and would love to retain our title.

The numbers were quote low the last week of term, I'd hate to see how low they'd get throughout the summer. I would like more one-off activities throughout the summer but most of our leaders don't have jobs that are agreeable to such things. Our trip to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was a weekday matinee in the Easter holidays. It meant lots of leaders and parents taking the day off work though.

We're still going! Both Beaver Colones, Cub Packs and the other Troop have all boken up for Summer but we are still meeting, lighting fires, cooking, building shelters etc etc.

We are off to camp on 14th August. We're having this Friday off to go and check out the camp site, but we'll be meeting the following week. The Monday before we go to camp, we're having a first aid evening. Our schools broke up over a week ago and quite a few are on holiday, but we still got 16 on Friday night.

Once camp is over, we'll be off until the kids go back to school the first week in September. Yes, Leaders need a break, but 6 weeks?????

We will be breaking up at the end of November for Christmas though as the weather is rubbish and it will give us the chance to go and see family etc. which we don't get the chance to do most of the year.
