    Smile Beaver Opening Ceremonies

    Hiya,
I am looking at changing the way how we start our meeting, when we return in a couple of weeks. At present we stand in a semi circle and say the Promise, but I want to try an liven things up a bit. So........ what do you do? I know that some Colonies 'gather logs' to open with. I have a fairly small group of around 8 YP and they will only just be put into lodges this term. Any info you can give will be gratefully received.

    Hi
Why not do a Beaver Yell to get them going? If you call River Banks (Beavers stand in two straight lines opposite each other, Leaders one at each end if poss ) then Build a Dam (Beavers move out into a circle with Leader(s) in as well. Beavers and Leaders then yell out
    123 who are we
we are beavers can't you see
    B E A V E R
    Beavers, Beavers, RA RA RA.

Beavers could be crouched down and then jump up at the RA RA RA bit and clap their hands behind their backs (to simulate tail slap)

This wakes them up, you can be as loud or as quiet as you like (I think the louder the better!) and then when they have finished they are ready to start their evening off with a game or an activity. The advantage to River Banks and Build a Dam is that you can add new Beavers easily.

We have three Lodges (soon to be four) and it works really well (only just started doing them just before Centenary Camps). They take up three sides of the hall and the BSL stands on the fourth wall.

After a bit of messing around and games as the Beaver Scouts enter, the BSL will call "Riverbanks" and they all have to tidy the toys away by giving them to a Leader and then get into their Lodges. They have got the hang of this and it makes it easier for getting them into groups for games/activities as well (might not be so easy with so few, but give it a go with two Lodges).

We then crouch down and all say (very quietly) "We are the Beaver Scouts, you can see. Fun and Friends for you and me. 10th Oxford* Beaver Scouts... one...2...3..." (on the one, two, three) they all jump up in the air. If we have enough time in the evening and they weren't very good, we do it another time, which they seem to enjoy.

*Note: You would obviously change the name to suit your Colony*

The one 'ninthskip' mentions is really good as well and is the one that I did when I was a Beaver Scout (at the Group at which I am now a Leader coincidentally).

Best of luck with whatever you choose.

We have river banks and build the dam as ninthskip describes and then the Beaver Leader says 'who are you and what do you do' and the Beavers reply with 'Beavers Beavers Beavers, Sharing Sharing Sharing' and then everyone claps their hands 3 times.

Our colony stand in a circle and then take one step at a time into the middle, spelling out the word "hello" with each step & ending with a very loud shout of "hello" -
    h-e-l-l-o hello

they then say the promise and motto.

At the end, they form a circle, move into the middle and then step out backwards spelling "goodbye"
    g-o-o-d-b-y-e goodbye

I Ninthskip's beaver leader... and we do the same at the end.. but if it was a great meeting and the Beavers enjoyed it, we raise the roof... if it wasn't so good... not to be repeated... we do it quietly! That way all the leaders get instance feedback...

we do riverbanks, build a dam, prayers and notices.. with the circle the other way round so parents can hear me! and then the same chant!

Well in January we changed our opening ceremony. We used to stand in a circle and walk out whilest spelling out hello or bye at the end.

Now we have all the beavers standing in lodges around the edge of the wood floor (we have carpet round the edge) and we have a flag at one end with leaders standing eather side of the flag. We start off by saying hello but without moving, the duty lodge leader raises the flag and we all make the scout sign. We then do inspection and finally move into a circle for the register. We had the beavers involved in deciding what we did for the ceremonys.
