Find your nearest...

Hi all.

I've been looking around for the last few days online but haven't had much in finding out how to do this...

I'm basically wanting to make a "find your nearest group" page on my district's website like a lot of companies out there do. The best idea I've found for a scouting version to be based on. is McDonald's because you could filter fr each section and show meeting times etc.

However, I have no idea how to do this. The tutorials out there all seem very confusing to me! I've managed to set up a normal map plotting the groups on but thought being able to locate your nearest would make it that bit more web 2.0!

I'd appreciate any help anyone can give out there - this could even turn into a script that everybody across the country could use with the right implementation, possibly...?

Rich W and I where playing with the new html5 geolocation spec recently. Once it is finalise and is more widely adopted, that would be a good shout, however, thats still a good bit off.

David C's method seems bed atm,

Thanks for your replies guys...

I feel I should make myself clearer, though. I can manage to do maps like you've supplied examples of but would really like for the visitor to be able to put in their postcode and for the page/map to be able to give them a list of their nearest groups.

I'm thinking that unless you've got a geospatially enabled database serving this query then your best bet would be a static map showing catchment areas - I'd be using www.scribblemaps.com
The postal code search function you're describing is available from a widget on www.scouts.ca - maybe someone there can share how they did this.

Good luck!

Keith,

How have you managed to get the logo onto your google map? Is it something you can edit from the google pages? If so, how?

If you want to see how Scouts Canada does it go to www.scouts.ca and enter a postal code (you can use mine for example L7L4S1) and it shows you all of the section you are looking for within 100km of the postal code. No idea what program they are using though!

The Boys' Brigade UK site does the same as the Scouts Canada site. Put your postcode in at it definitely works. Not sure how though.

Perhaps this is something Scout HQ should be looking at? If the BB can do it nationally, TSA ought to be able to!

I know this is a bump, but I've been playing with something recently.

www.gavin-holt.com/maps

use my schools postcode of ML5 5EA

Feedback will be taken onboard, although tbh, im not doing much work on it, it was an exercise in Google Maps.

if you have more than one it's better.

Gavin looks good, wonder if HQ have ever thought of doing something similar for all Scout Groups, ESUs, Networks, SSAGOs, SASs, Scout Campsites?

Rule 66. A map and compass offers no protection against getting horribly lost.

Looks really good, it'd be really useful to have something like that on Scouts.org.uk showing all Scout Groups in the UK and giving a link to their website and/or way to contact them.

Yes people can fill in the joining form but that doesn't give them the choice over which Group is best located for them
