we have always found it hard to make learning the promise fun... and last night my nearly young leader (he is still a scout) rose to the challenge - I asked him a couple of weeks a go to come up with a new game for a meeting. The meeting theme was promise, and last night he was brilliant.
He had made four posters
"Do my best"
He had put one up in each corner of the hall and then explained the rules to the Beavers...
They had to shout "I promise" and he would reply with one of the sentences above - they then raced to that corner, and the last one was out... they all shouted "I promise" again and he sent them off to another corner!
The kids loved it, they want to play it again next week! They also knew all the words to the promise by the end of it....
Just had to share!
Thanks, Mine would love that
BSL 1st Highweek
I've stored that one for a couple of weeks time. You should get this game saved onto Programmes On-Line
Simba (my daughter wouldn't let me be Rafiki, and now she's an explorer)
Birstall Scout Group
That is simple and therefore superb. Credit to your 'young leader'.
Awesome! Have 6 newbies started this week, so will do as coming in game next week! Your YL's ears must be glowing red!
2 kids, 1 house, non-scouty husband, BSL, ACSL, and 1 full time job!! If I can do it why can't everybody else?!?
That is a fab idea!! i also have 6 newbies this term so this will really help - tell your scout thank you from 1st milton beavers!!!
Dawn - Red Beaver
BSL 1st Milton Regis
We use the same game
Another good one, once they get the hang of the promise, is to print the promise in large letter, chop it up into phrases then get the Beavers to put it back together in a relay race.
I am going to use this one in my programme as I have had an influx of newbies so need something to get the promise to stick and also remind the others what its all about. It will certainly help my old addled brain I can tell you.
definitely going to use this one!!
started back at beavers last night after the summer holiday break. we had lost loads to cubs and still had 14 on our books. I had heard we had some new ones coming... then our BSL told me we had 10 new ones coming!
Definitely need to use this game methinks!!
Courtney AKA 'Tiger' ABSL
Fantastic - 5 newbies & 5 more after half term so this will be one for them all methinks! Please thank your young leader from 1st Heath Hayes Beavers!!! Like the relay race idea too but knowing me I'd lost some of the phrases!
Rachel - BSL 1st Heath Hayes
Tried this last week with 4 newbies. Needed a bit of prompting to shout the "I promise" but soon got the hang of it! We were going to try another round of it without the posters on the walls but ran out of time.
Thanks to your nearly young leader!
