    The power of advertising...

We're doing the Emergency Aid 1 badge with our Beaver scouts so, last night, i asked "There are 4 emergency services, can you name them?"

We had one say 'police' and another 'coastguard' (which i thought would be the hardest but we are in Devon near the sea)...then we had... 'The AA' (!)

Tried to explain the difference but he was adament "...but the tv advert says they're the fourth emergency service..."

and that's why i love doing Beavers scouts....

I'm suprised a Beaver can remember that advertising slogan seeing as the AA stopped using it a few years ago.

I'm sure when I was a Cub, the phone book listed 6 emergency services available through 999.

A bit worrying that a beaver is looking for help with their drink problem

When doing first aid with my cubs, when we came to explaining about looking for danger i was shocked that the FIRST danger the kids could think about (aside from say glass on the floor or whatever) was ''someone with a knife'' closly followed by ''someone with a gun''

    Cave Rescue.

But mountain and cave rescue are co-ordinated by the police, so always ask for police, and if you're on mobile and know it, name the force so they don't put you through to the wrong one!

Some emergency operators will actually put you through to the fire service if you ask for cave rescue, which is really not a good idea, as they tend to get a little too involved...

If you use 999 from a mobile you should be connected to the emergency switchboard local to the mast to which you are connected - but my mobile once showed an Isle of Man network from the sea front at Seascale, Cumbria and an American network when half way from Hull to Zeebrugge so don't assume the mast is local!

You can also use 112 from any EU member state.

(I'm not sure on the ability of the operator to locate you "immediately" unless you are near to a number of masts)
