    Escouts System Support- Applications Invited

    Applications are invited for the voluntary role of Escouts System Support, within the Escouts Team.

    The job specification is below, if you are interested in the role, and wish to apply, please email [email protected] , including the answer to the following questions:

    What is your Occupation / or what studing are you currently doing?

    What is your current role within the UK Scout Association?

    What General Experience do you have with computer systems, operating systems, troubleshooting. Please list rough dates, Operating Systems and Software involved?.

    Specifically, what experience do you have with supporting web servers for example, using reseller accounts. Please list Control Panel software you have used?

    What general experience do you have troubleshooting problems in a webhosting environment?

    How do you think you'd deal with our users?

    Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about?

    Job Specification
    Title:
    Escouts System Support

    Outline: To support and assist the users of Escouts, and to help maintain the Escouts service.

    Responsible for: N/A

    Responsible to: Escouts Management. (Richard Fairbairn & Jonathan Bloor)

    Main Contacts: Escouts Team, and users.

    Appointment Requirements: This role is a technical role, which above all requires a working knowledge of the basic concepts of a hosting server operates. It is not envisaged that this role will require any knowledge of command line Unix, however the confidence to work in a control panel environment is essential. The Escouts server uses directadmin, however most of the skills used in systems such as CPanel are transferable. Above all common sense and a cool head are required. A serving Scouter is desirable.

    Main Tasks

    ·Support users via the Support forum and via Perldesk, troubleshooting where necessary.

    ·Create new hosting accounts for valid UK Scout hosting applications, on the Escouts server

    ·Liase with the Escouts Awards Team when necessary

    ·Answer questions relating to Escouts on the forum on the Escouts team behalf.

    ·On discovering a major issue with the Escouts server or other services, escalate it to the Escouts Management as soon as possible

    Time commitment: As the Escouts Team have jobs and other life’s, the commitment we make to our users is to cover the helpdesk and server as much as possible. With that in mind we do not operate a rota. Whilst we obviously are asking for some time in a week, this may mean very little, and some weeks it may mean several hours depending on the time and demand at the time. The overriding factor is always when you are available.
