    When Blue Peter became Abba

Tonight, 10.00, Channel 4. Four former BP presenters, including Chief Scout Peter Duncan, take the challenge to become a convincing abba tribute band, with five days to prepare before appearing in front of 70,000 fans.

Peter Duncan seems to be involved in a lot of TV programmes at the moment - just two days ago he began a new series called Demolition Dad!

"Hi, Peter Duncan, Former Blue Peter Presenter, and Chief Scout, were doing a big concert in Ireland tomorrow, can we just practice another hour or an hour and a half?"

Looks like some running commentary here

Yeah no wonder he's not got much time to be the Chief Scout and do Chief Scout Visits, remember them.

He's too busy being Chief Scout and re-launching his television career. Did I say that, so I did.

By the way, Peter, Scotland is that place north of Newcastle, okay then, north of the M25!

I've met him twice now, and actually you should give him his due, he is fantastic in what he does as Chief Scout. Give him time and he'll come and visit.

And so what if he's rebuilding his television career? There was loads of publicity for TSA from Peter in last nights programme. I haven't seen anyone from HQ complain.

Not complaining, dont get me wrong,

I've seen him once and that was at the opening of eurojam. Note when I say seen him, I mean seeing him on the stage whilst I was on the floor, so not like side by side!

Come on Richard, we all know Scouting hasn't evolved to the 21st century anywhere North of Oxford.

Seriously though, I haven't heard anything of him going out of his way to visit us up here.

Peter Duncan is a fantastic advert for Scouting, there is no doubting that, in that respect we couldnt have asked for more, what better person to publicise Scouting in our Centenary year.

He works for a living, so do most leaders, time is precious, I grant you. Maybe we got all too used to those Chief Scout Visits.

But I worry that this new approach will lack the substance to lead our movement in the Second Century of Scouting. One of the things the previous Chief Scout did, was to inspire the leaders and the Kids.

Yes he works well will kids, but he's not enthusing the Leadership, and he's not seeing enough Kids to make that much of a difference.

But nevermind, if you dont catch him at a local event, you'll catch him on the telly. maybe thats what this generation of young people want, Scouting to be cool

I think Scouting needs to be seen as "cool".

Not taking anything away from any previous Chief Scouts, but the man on the street is more likely to know who Peter Duncan is, which is presumably why he got the position.

Yeah, if the Chief Scout can tell the public Scouting is cool, then people will want to be part of it, and if they're part of it, they're proud of it, which i think is the whole idea.

I see it like this... if you want a CS who does loads of visits, you really need someone retired.

What is the better image for scouting - someone old, or someone young, well known and active?

Peter Duncan hasn't been in the job long - I'm sure he will get round to some visiting as and when he has time. Unless i'm much mistaken the CS is a voluntary role, like being a scout leader, etc - so perhaps we shouldnt expect him to give up too much time??
