    Leader Recruitment

As a Leader I curently have one Assistant. I have an ideal person in mind to be another. I mentioned my plan to my current assistant who is not happy and wants to be the one and only.

I know with our numbers we need at least one more - maybe two but I am now a little uncertain how to proceed.

In my opinion I have to do what is best for the group and this is it. Do I have the 'power/authority' to approach people to join us - , how can I get my current assistant to see the 'bigger' picture ?

    Thanks

You need to explain to your assistant that Scouting is all about team work. Plus you have to cover your Leader:Young Person ratio too. PLus the more leaders you have, the more activities you can be doing. Find out why he doesn't want a bigger leadership team. If you have people in mind, approach them yourself or get help from your GSL.

    What an odd scenario...

Scouting would be so much fun, if it weren't for the adults.

    Is it just a mis-understanding?

We recently recruited a new ACSL - my current ACSL phoned me in distress (she hadn't been at the meeting to talk to) as she thought there could only be one ACSL, and she was being ousted. Once I explained this was not the case and her job security worries dealt with, all has been happiness again

Very odd indeed... perhaps it is just a misunderstanding as frazzle suggests?

Then again people can be awfully territorial and if it's just been the two of you for quite some time without previously talking about getting extra leaders, then your current assistant may be resistant to change. That'll take some good conversations explaining why you need the extra leaders and allaying any fears they may have.

Have you asked them why they are opposed to it?

If it is just a 'one-and-only' mentality you may need to start thinking about the long-term requirements for your Pack leadership team...

Discuss it with your GSL, as he/she will have to approve the application for the appointment of any new leader in the group before the form goes off to district.

YLs don't count in ratios, either for or against.

You probably need to re-read their post as there was no mention of YLs.

It stated Leader Young Person ratio correct.

Thanks Dave for pointing that out.

There isn't any mention of how long the ACSl has been there, if they haven't been there long, they might be unaware of the ratios needed between Leaders and Children 'Young People'.

It would be intersting to hear eventually why this ACSL feels this way.

Don't underestimate how easy it is for some very small things to be misunderstood completely if you come at things from different perspectives
If it was easy, it wouldn't be so much fun...

she said that she didnt understand how i would split the roles and responsibilities and she would not take a back seat

however when given the opportunity to run a completely planned meeting with me as her assistant she didnt and has subsequently said she doesnt want to be in the position where she is in charge without me present ( even thou there would be yl and oh there) and numbers would be less than 10.

I'd say that was clearly a back seat

I agree with you that it sounds as if she is already firmly in the back seat!

Given what you say in your second paragraph, what are her roles and responsibilities at the moment? (It would seem to be very little - what exactly does she do?).

When you say completely planned, was this planned by her or you? (I really not very keen on running a programme planned by somebody else, but I do otherwise I would end up planning all the terms programmes!).

How experienced is this assistant and how much training has she done? It may be that her reticence is down to a lack of experience, or perhaps she feels that you have it all under control and is hesitant to step up.

More question than answers, I am afraid, but it does seem to be a situation that need sorting.

Sorry if this is mixing two threads up, but I think you've got a perfect reason and IMHO requirement to up your team numbers.

With more bodies, there will be less friction.

And with more bodies you are less reliant on the whim of a single leader.
