    Old tilley lamps

    Dear all

I've found a large box of Tilley lamps but not sure if they can be (or are worth fixing). Does anyone know anything about them?

    Thanks.

Gas ones are useful if you can get new glasses and mantles. The Tilley Guardsmen - you can probably get them running for as little as a few quid for some seals.

Tilley Guardsma is worth between £10 - £30 - as seen nearer the bottom end.

Looks like a couple of Primus stoves in there too. Again, a few quid on seals and you could be in business. If complete, maybe £15-£40 depending upon model and condition. As is you should get about £40 - £50 on ebay. But that could go upo or down depending upon how many others are available at the time.

Is this like the guessing the number of sweets game? If so my guess is 3 gas lamps, 3 tilley lamps, 1 hurricane lamp and 2 primus stoves

To be serious the tilleys do not look to bad to me. A new mantle and a bit of a clean up might get them working and if not a few seals and at worst a new vapouriser will probably sort them. Would be well worth the effort IMHO.

Should be fairly easy to get the Tilleys working again. We recently bought two on ebay and after a service and a few seals etc replacing they are working fine. In fact the one sold as U/S is now the one that works better!!

If you don't want them, I'm happy to drive to Surrey to take them off your hands ;-)

We are lucky to have a parent (ex military) who saw our "misused" Tilley lamps and has made them as good as new, even making bespoke storage boxes for them. If you are still stuck pm me and I'll put you in touch with him for his "tricks" in doing so

Is this like "where's Wally"? I can only see 1 primus. They are all worth fixing up, and shouldn't cost too much.

You can get all the bits for Tilley Lamps HERE

Also the primus stoves are very sought after on ebay - if you can, have a go at lighting one and see what an überstove it is. (It's Rocket science....!)

As long as the seals aren't perished- soak them in parafin and see if you can pressurise the chamber.

Carefully prick out the jets with a strand of copper wire (there used to be a tool for it back in the day.

Get it HOT before lighting (meths is the normal starter)

    Deepest Tilley Joy!.....

So jealous of your hoard there!

Tilleys are much cheaper than gas, give a softer, nicer light.

Just because you have to learn how to light them (not hard) some folks would rather throw them away....

    Send them to me please.

Intersting post Chris we have a bout half a dozen in the sort on condition shown above I want to get the primus stoves we have going again more thanm the lamps.

Though Chris what do really expect with the use of those words I seem to remember giggles from that stuff when I were a lad.

Everybody now smells of paraffin. Highlights for some of the scouts seemed to be the leadercs use of the words ‘knob’ and ‘prick’. Both are perfect words in context… But they seemed to prompt giggles. Sigh.
