    Red Bull X-Alps Competition.

My nephew is once again representing GBR in this astonishing combination of multi marathon and endurance Paragliding competition. Starting in Saltzburg, Austria the atheletes must run or fly, via a series of checkpoints, to Monte Carlo in Monaco, a straight line distance of 1000Km. Jon, my nephew, was invited to race in the 2011 edition as GBR2, finishing 5th overall.

Tonight, on the live tracking feed, you can see that he is in 4th place, although FRA2, ROM and FRA1 are only a handful of Km away from him and those positions are likely to change hour by hour.

Jon was a Scout in Cumbria - a Troop in Sedburgh, I think - and traveled to the World Jamboree in Seoul, whenever that was! He lives with his young family in Geneva. By the rules, which changed for this year, two support crew are allowed and for Jon that is Richard, his dad - my brother in law - and a specialist paragliding weather expert. The electronic tracking and verifying equipment is quite extensive and coping with that, cooking huge pasta meals and driving the mobile home so as to be where Jon lands or wants to take off, is challenge enough. The physical, technical and psychological challenges for the athlete are astonishing - almost, but not quite, as much as 'Le Tour' - currently led by Brit Christopher Froome!

Just thought you might like to know.

Don't criticize a man until you walk a mile in his shoes then, when you criticize him, you are a mile away; and you've got his shoes.
