    Volunteers being driven away

    Wayne,

I'm not sure how closely you follow the rest of this forum, but I know you are familiar with Ewan (aka Bushfella), one of the more "vocal" members of this community.

I would like to bring your attention to this thread:

    http://www.escouts.org.uk/forum/thre...ng-Cold-Turkey

Unfortunately the thread which explains more about this, appointment reviews, is currently under investigation - although perhaps the escouts team would be willing to share the contents of it with you.

My question to you is this:

Ewan is not the sort of person to give up easily, but has now been driven from Scouting by bad management, local rules, and politics. How many more volunteers must we lose before action is taken to prevent local managers imposing local rules and driving dedicated volunteers away from the movement.

I always feel lucky that this isn't a problem in my local County, but from reading threads on this forum it is obvious that a significant number of other leaders are not so fortunate.

    Many thanks

    Dan

    Hi Dan,

I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment on personal disputes of this nature. As I've mentioned previously there are always two sides to stories like these and it would be wrong to take a view having only heard one side which may, or may not, reflect the full story.

it always saddens me when people fall out like this and especially when the values that we base our Movement on appear to get lost in the process.

    thanks,
    Wayne

    Hi Wayne

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Perhaps my question was badly phrased - I certainly wouldnt expect you to comment on individual cases. I was more wondering what could perhaps be done to reduce these sort of problems recurring in the future. Ewan is a vocal Scouter, and well known in this community. I'm sure many other volunteers just leave quietly.

Generally Scouting's national rules, within POR, make sense. They might not be written in a way that is always easy to interpret, but they are there for a reason. Counties and districts are seemingly free to impose any rule that they see fit regardless of whether they actually make sense. So my question really is whether something can be done to prevent this happening.

    Thank you

I don't believe this is about local rules Dan, it is a dispute between adults.
