Update, i got some compass work done this weekend. The servers seem more solid now.

I have yet to see answers to questions and bugs that have been raised on the forum.
I have no idea what the timeline is for fixing problems
I have no idea if/when compass will offer basic functions that i need
I am waiting for a response from vetting to questions asked a loooong time ago, I will get back to them. Maybe the DBS system is working better now.

I have now put our data into OSM and rather than the graphically scatalogical descriptions of compass that i have received from my section leaders, i am told "i love this!"

I'm afraid that you've lost me. Compass does nothing for me. Not one thing. And to comply with the HQ edict, i have spent days and days on your system. I will keep complying. I will update the info, i will add new kids, remove old ones etc...

but i cannot export a programme or a register, download a list of email addresses, run in-touch, see medical info for a section etc, do my register simply, get updates on badges owed, run staged badges or participation badges, have custom fields for subs or anything else. I need ethnicity for a grant application soon... i can't get that out.

why does the medical box allow only 100 characters? What if a child's needs are even a little bit complex? Why are names being misspelled after we input them?

How do i tell a parent that i fail to contact in an emergency that i could not use compass and i failed to update out offline lists with the data that she provided for compass?

I am using your official form but have no idea what i am supposed to do with the url of a child's facebook page... or a parent's? Do I befriend the cubs on facebook? how was this data to be used?

How do i use the info that we ask very starkly about employment status? We have quite a few unemployed locally. Some are ex-traders with millions in the bank. Some are low income families that need our help. We can tell the difference and don't need to ask a question on a form to start the process.

Where is the medical permission bit? (from your own permission forms)

Where is the photo notification that the Scouts suggest that we have?

I have edited the form to say "ignore" "ignore" for data that i do not want and cannot use. I am preparing a second form to collect extra data.

I don;t think anything like enough time was spent on this form.

When will we have a parent portal into Compass to allow date to be entered directly? As was always the plan. The form was a fallback option. Is dixie dead?

i sat in district meetings telling people not to use OSM because compass was coming. I did the same on here. I was ready to embrace it totally. I was not an OSM advocate who has ben anti-compass from the start, Compass has turned me by being rubbish.

If hq run a webcast that show me i am wrong and that compass does have loads of brilliant functions, export ability etc and that one can run a group out of compass alone, i will watch and be happy to be proved wrong.

Honestly. I still want compass to work. But until then... our group has stagnated a bit while we waited for compass. We can't wait any longer... and Ed wants a new car.

    Update:

Two different sets of parents have asked why they are signing a form that we immediately destroy.

    What answer do i give?

that last question was answered to a point by somebody from HQ. Matt Hyde got in touch.

A new update: I am now only using compass because if i do not, i will be sacked from scouting.

This is the first time in scouting that i have ever done something that is pointless. I have been doing this for 30 years (youth and adult) and have done alot of things but i have never before done something just because i was told to.

I have done things that i have not enjoyed because i was asked to by people that i respect (and i could see a reason for doing it).
I have done things that were upsetting out of duty.
I have done things that were massively tedious because the result was a wonmderful camp. (10 days of activities for 65 people in kandersteg... that was a hell of a difficult task but i did it and it was well worth it)
I have also not done things because i did not want to. Lots of things. I have looked at things and thought 'nope, not for me'.

This is the first time in 30 years that I have been asked to do something pointless. The data will not be used by us in Compass any time in the next few months. I cannot imagine it will be close to usable before september. I reckon it will be more than that.

    the email system is awful
    the sms system lacks functionality
there are no reports for in-touch (so why are we destroying the forms?)
the badge system only works in parts...
    i can't record subs
    i can't take payments (phase 2? ETA?)

i will keep it up to date

if i learn of any changes, i will make them as quickly as i can.

I will do this because i will be sacked if i do not. From here at my computer, it is a very miserable way to be managed.

    Hi Wayne,

It was obvious to so many of us that compass was not fit for purpose but we received lots of messages that "everything is fine" and we tried to make it work. Time that was 100% wasted.

This is not 20:20 hindsight. The volunteer testers were flagging up problems over a year ago that were never fixed. Those of who read the FAQ were highlighting fatal flaws in the system (the lack of reports was explicit months ago in the FAQ)...

We are not wallies but that is how i feel like i have been treated.

serious question: will the SA pay better heed next time something like this happens and not (as I feel happened) press on regardless?

    update:

our explorer leader cannot run camps as he does not have a valid DBS.

our just-turned 18s are still being refused places on camps and sleepovers with the sections in which they volunteer because they are not DBSd.

I'm using the official form now. As I must.

    It really is dreadful.

Example: t keeps asking for phone numbers

(mobile number at start of form - always parent 1's
mobile number for emergency contact - always parent 1's
mobile number for parent 1 - this is parent 1's)

The emergency contact is always parent 1. Be honest: was this really trialled in counties for months before main launch? Are my parents unique and everybody else does this correctly?

I have amended the form to stop us asking for social media info and that seems not to have been thought through.

Nationality is free text and being roundly ignored by parents so if compass comes back, i will have to ask for that data again.

I have very specific requesst for mailing preferences on this form that are not replicated in compass.

It is a really awful piece of work and as it is one of our first moments of contact with the parents, it urgently needs fixing.

It was delivered to us with the order to use it. We are using it.
The reason was that our old forms were not good enough. That is very insulting. They were better than this.

Oh, and nobody is giving me DOB for parents, so if compass is made to live again and not just shot in the ditch after the first fence, i will have to go back to collect that if we want to use the system as it was intended.

    so... ummm....

way back when i saw compass for the first time properly, i had this conversation:

me: oh, it's ok.... it'll be good when it's properly built
friend with a test login: no, that's it. It's being launched
me: no no no... it can't be. It's crap. This won't work.
friend: well... it's going live in a week. This is it.
me: but... but... they can't. This will be a disaster.

It was obvious within minutes of using compass that the web interface was appalling (and probably insecure). There was no way in heck that leaders would be able to manage their sections and the permission were absolutely jiggered.

I know there will be a review. The people who will be given the results of the review are the people who thought compass would work. That worries me.

Is there any reason for me not to be worried?

Happy to reassure you Chris that the review will be both independent and transparent, the intention is to be able to fully publish before the AGM in September.
