    Internet Awareness

Recently I ran a night at explorers under the topic of "Internet Awareness". It was a good night, I couldn't believe how many people needed a bit of further education on the topic, even the leaders! You should try it and see how much people actually don't know about the topic, it benefits everyone in the long run.

Would be interested to know what subjects you covered, sounds like a good idea! Maybe needed as our group seems to be very web-based.

Sorry for this delayed reply... But hey:

    Subjects I covered were:-
    - Safe browsing - How to spot adware / spyware (Mainly Active X Controls),
    - Virus Education - How to avoid getting them in the first place, what to do when you get them, and I also gave everyone a list of websites with safe virus removal tools.
    - Safe Interactive Browsing - How to spot phishing sites (Sites that pretend to be another site to get information such as login details), How to see if its safe to purchase things online (SSL),
    - Optimising computer storage / speed - Removal of history, cookies and Temporery Internet Files.
    - Safe Email Management - How to setup SPAM filters, I also offered out invites to gmail. Also, how to spot virus infested emails.
    - Safe IM Chatting - How to spot people who say they are who they aren't, what to do in these situations, and what information should never be given in any IM Conversation.
I ended in a game, split the group into 3 teams, named them: FBI, The Population, The Virus people (THis team picks a catchy name), and it's a bit like stuck in the mud, but the Population run around and get chased by the Virus people, then the FBI have to come and free the Population, and catch the Virus People. If the FBI catch any of the virus people, they are turned into the general population. The game ends when there are no virus people left. If the number of the general population caught exceeds 5, then the Virus People Win.

I couldn't agree more with the need for this at all ages, not just Explorers. One of our Scouts recently had an email asking him to fill in an online questionnaire. All he had to do was enter his Hotmail account password....

The next day I received a very odd and rather vulgar email supposedly from him. The give away was that it was sent a 1am on a weekday, and I know he wasn't sending emails at that time of night!

His parents were mortified, so was he and he learned a very hard lesson. I haven't the heart to tell the poor thing that since that my email has also become infested with spam....

I would reccomend you use www.thinkuknow.co.uk to give then a bit more of an insight into the safety aspects It has been developed by CEOP and is aimed at high-school aged people, it is slowly being added to, but should hopefully be quite full before too long
