Scouts.org.uk and trying to find badges

I followed the steps recounted by big chris, and I can see what he means. It's always interesting to look at user experience on other sites and compare with those I've worked on.

The immediate cause, I think, is that the badge requirements are on members.scouts.org.uk and the search is only scoped for scouts.org.uk (the main site).

However, there's also a considerable opportunity. A lot of the material on the Scout site(s) is inter-related. Chris's search found promotions of badge-work as part of Scouting. That could be linked to details of the badges, and their requirements. That could be linked to relevant programme ideas. That could be linked to magazine articles on "how we did it". That could be linked to POR requirements. This requires a metadata system behind the content, to do the linking.

So the search could be expanded and improved but, if related material were inter-linked, it wouldn't matter quite so much, because your first result would lead on to others closer to what you personally actually wanted.

In the mean time, Google works quite well. To be honest, most people seem to feel that Google searches their site better than their own site search.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the website confusing. with regards to badges I normally use the badge app on my mobile (now that the app has been updated) and google for anything else.
Also speaking to parents, they have found it to be a bit of a minefield as well!

If I google 'scout badge requirements' the first match I get is https://members.scouts.org.uk/suppor...ges-and-awards

That has clearly been done to be search engine friendly because the words 'scout' 'badges' and 'awards' are in the URL. However, having got to the page it only describes the different groups of badges - Activity, Challenge, Core - you can't click on the titles for more information. In order to give people easy links to all the Scout section badges you have to give 3 URLs, ie.

    https://members.scouts.org.uk/suppor.../?cat=7,64,781
    https://members.scouts.org.uk/suppor.../?cat=7,64,779
    https://members.scouts.org.uk/suppor.../?cat=7,64,780

These are not search engine friendly and there isn't a single link you can give which would allow you to find all of them. Just to compare them:

    The google match:
    members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/2968/scout-badges-and-awards

The three you have to give:
    members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search/?cat=7,64,781
    members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search/?cat=7,64,779
    members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search/?cat=7,64,780

It is so annoying the way that TSA talk guff about social media and drop in an irrelevent 'create a web page' in badge requirements when they can't do it properly themselves!

Rose colored glasses, Wayne? Hmmmm. We were never issued with these, so can only look back and remember the problems that the SBUK team of IT professionals had towards the end. When staff did attend our meetings it was clear we were not all talking the same language, and taking the site forward was proving difficult and why - eventually - we had to walk away. No point now in recriminations, we were happy with what we had done from start-up but were probably overly concerned to work with firmly established technology; it was clearly time to pass on the baton.

Wayne's reply was a bit of a shoulder shrug - yes we know it is not very good but tough. But then to mention the micro sites which are the "temporary" fix to the poor main site immediately asks the question - why not create a micro site for the badges?

The members side of the Scout Website is antiquated in its construction, and is a nightmare to navigate. It is not in the least bit user friendly.

For example - where an in-page link would be relevant, why not have it? Yes I know the link is there in the side-bar but there's no harm in having two links to do the same thing and it would make people's lives easier.

We tend to deep-link from our group website to specific pages on TSA's website to direct our members to relevent content rather than simply saying "go and look on TSAs website"

I know there's a lot of content in there - but its so so so badly managed and so badly designed.

It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves
