    Gift aid

    Hi All,
Once again I turn to the collective power of Escouts to find a solution

I have applied to register with HMRC for a charities reference number which will allow us to begin to claim back gift aid however it seems to be a long and winding road.
HQ have put me in touch with the legal team who provided me with an article of association.
I then registered with HMRC and got a government gateway ID and that is where I seemed to hit a wall.

Has anyone been through this process or is able to point me in the right direction.

    Thanks
    Antony
I was told it was only an hour a week....

I registered as self employed earlier in the year. You *should* receive the password by post, and then instructions and the gateway is fairly self explanatory. But I had an issue where I obviously didn't get some of the confirmations. I basically ended up starting again from scratch with the same details and the second time through it took. The password definitely comes by post though.

One little problem with the government gateway is that it lets you sign up with long passwords but when you log on it limits you to 11 characters - if memory serves me correctly. If you type in more than 11 characters then it decides your password is wrong. Nowhere does it tell you there is a limit to the password length.

Why is it that when they spend millions on these software projects they can't get a simple bit of it correct?

They were too busy on developing Compass to worry about small details such as password length.

I don't think HMRC had much to do with it.

Hi all, new to the site. I've just become treasurer to a group that so far has not registered for gift aid.
I believe that I have to write to HMRC requesting to register for gift aid.
Does anyone have any advice on what to put in the letter to HMRC?

I seem to recall that we registered as a charitable group online - it gets a bit confusing when you have two separate Government Gateway Accounts. But It didn't take a great deal of work, as I recall. Only ever use it when we do the Gift Aid Claim.

We spent ages doing ours but got there eventually. So you need a HMRC reference number which you use to register on the government website to claim the gift aid, this is where you get the gateway id. Then you sign up for the the gift aid service once your account is accepted. They then send you an activation password for the gift aid claim which you log back into your account to activate and that’s it you can then send your claim in. We did our first one a few months ago and got 1900.
