Ah Cloudflare error messages, and that's not a helpful one.

I'm just about to tackle a major hosting move myself, mainly due to one of my projects becoming way too popular, so I'm upgrading significantly. Hopefully I wont have any issues as it's a first for me, but I have good tech support.

It did take me longer than expected to get access to Escouts again and I did miss it for a few days (didn't help that I forgot my password) but for Jon and Magician to transfer an entire forum to new hosting without losing any data makes a very successful transfer so a big well done to them. While I can tell my team of journalists and columnists not to publish anything during the transfer, you can't really tell Escouts members not to post.

Looks like I am doing the right thing security wise using Cloudflare, among other things, and SSL - any other useful stuff I should really be using on that front Gavin? And any tips for the upcoming hosting move, based on you guys experience?

So the DNS propagation taking so long is just one of these things. We had a low TTL and most ISPs picked us up quickly. I actually had mine regress then swap back!

We don't use cloudflare for security (other than the DDoS/Known bad actor protection) but simply as a CDN. The main benefit of removing our DNS from our hosting is to allow us to move easier. We use mod_security with some custom rules and protective monitoring to secure the environment.

We do full E2E TLS (that is, from CDN to App Server to DB Load Balancer to DB servers)

We have a DB of around 1GB, migrating that involved spinning up a large server to begin with and scaling it down after the fact for BAU. Using cloud infrastructure allowed us to do this for pennies.

Thanks Gavin. A friend of mine had a DDoS attack the other year, so he now uses that feature on cloudflare.

Before he upgraded he had an issue whereas when I shared one of his articles, the visitors I referred to him got I think it was 522 errors. These days I can share stuff from him without breaking his site.

I haven't looked at cloud options, but I will look into it.

I've done some tweaks to the timeouts and response times. I suspect the error will be far less frequent.

That's interesting. I am seeing spikes in server load. Will look to optimise it further.

Keep trying to edit my signature since the server move and I can't - just get the "Invalid File" error when I try to save it. Trying to remove the last line from my signature as we've filled the vacancies.
