It was discussed at length on 1FB, where sometimes debates are a lot more interesting and lively than here, and anyone complaining at 1FB should note that almost all the comments above were reflected there and at length.

For me - it's a comment piece and reflects a journalist's view of Scouting, I suspect it's not only similar, but probably a deal more complimentary than the view that many of public would hold. That's why he didn't research it, its a recollection and a view shaped by current experience outside the movement. In that context it's not surprising that he didn't research it.

Overall however it's a fond recollection and could have been written a good deal worse - if you wrote a "my view of Scouting" piece from non-Scouters it could well probably be tainted by "white, middle class and christian", and a worse view of the paedophilia view which is similar to the catholic church.

and many are as dull as ditchwater and others as interesting as those commenting on DT's fake news.

Opinion and Comment require no facts. They are what they say they are, opinion and comment.

In all honesty, most parents who send their kids to any form of youth group have only the faintest idea of why they do it. Most have no clue what their kids do at whatever group they go to.
