NA and HA badges - number font size

The sponsor for Nights Away and Hikes Away badges has changed, so the designs have been updated. Once again the design of the basic badge has been reduced in size, including the size of the number (the core information on the badge).

Can you tell what the numbers are on these badges (without using zoom)?

I really, really don't like this - it makes the badges embarrassing, a waste of money and failing to do what they are supposed to (rewarding and recognising participation in Scout activities).

I would like to know what others think too?

Small number sizes was an issue the last time a new sponsor was added too, members complained (rightly) and the design was changed (see this example).

So why, has the same thing been done again? (Careless re-design without checking that the badge remains useable).

I don't like sponsored badges in the first place but they seem to have made the same mistake this time as last where they've just scaled the picture and not bothered to look at the result.

Pretty poor really but then I don't have a very high opinion of HQ so it's not unexpected.
To get more kids we need more adults - are we getting the message yet?

Look at all that space at the sides! Why not put the backpack/whatever to the left and number to the right?

I don't agree with sponsored advertising on badges full stop. Badges are a core part of what we do and they should NOT be ruined by the sponsor of the day. There are plenty of other ways organisations can 'advertise' to members.

He who receives a good turn should never forget it; he who does one should never remember it.

Because the person who learnt that lesson the hard way has moved on.

Can I pay an extra 5p a badge to have one that isn't sponsored?

I get that it brings in money but somehow it grates. I think for me its that it pretty much destroys the point of having a uniform. If you're going to have say a nice smart Scout shirt, with a set of badges that are designed to fit with that - and ask Scouts to be proud of that uniform, wear it smartly etc - why the hell do you then plaster it with a load of misfit commercial logos so we end up looking like a walking paint splatter? When you then do it in such a way that the whole point of a badge which is to denote achievement is diminished - someone has lost the plot!
Does anyone know what's going on?

The one that gets me here is this.

We are only allowed to use the official badges. We cannot create, make, and award our own badges to be worn on uniform (e.g. we would have loved to be able to issue an "axe, knife and saw" badge once the Scouts have demonstrated competency to use them). Presumably this is to ensure uniformity

But we have a whole mismatched pile of badges in our stock. Some NA badges we've had for ages and have no sponsorship. Others with Cotswold. Now a load with Go Outdoors. Each with a different sized "badge emblem". It looks a mess.

I have no problem with sponsorship, but surely the sponsors logo needs to be made to fit in the available space at the bottom of the badge, rather than the badge symbol having to squeeze into whatever is left after teh sponsors logo.

I do. Kids are mobile billboards enough with sports clothing and the likes. I really, really object to it in a Scouting context. Massively. I'd rather a swingeing capitation increase.

I wonder if there are old nights away badges on ebay without logos on.

I'm guessing if you went rogue and had your own made without logos on, and got caught...you'd get a cease and desist letter from HQ's solicitors. So I wouldn't recommend that. It'd be pricey too.

    Quite right.

Also looks like the sponsor logo is larger than the badge icon, let alone the number!

To answer my own question. There are, but prohibitively expensive (1, 2.50...plus postage)

If I were TSA I would have changed the shape of activity badges to rectangles (at the same time they changed the shape of the challenge badges) which would allow for a much better space to fit in sponsors without ruining the image of the badge to the point it's too hard to work out what the badge actually is.

Personally, I'd get rid of the company car and private health insurance for senior TSA staff first.
