Of course, I only cover my face on the day of battle.

To cover one's face at any other time would be rude, bordering on offensive.
The long march through the institutions is nearly complete.

To be honest it wasn't easy kayaking in the mask.
The Roman Empire did not become great by holding meetings. It did so by killing everyone that opposed their point of view.

    Mmm...

I've learnt not to broach this subject, having twice (three times?) had heated debates with TSA members on this topic.

    Am saying nowt.

I like reading some of the comments on here, its quite entertaining

To me his remarks were probably taken out of context and mangled by the press, however they were rude and offensive. If his private emails have been made public thats is also wrong.

I don't care what clothing anyone wears be it next to nothing to totally covered except where :-
1/ they are being coerced/forced to against their will
2/ where they need to be identified and part of that is to see their face (bank, passport, building id) - I can't wear a balaclava in a bank so have no idea how that works with the lady in question but that is for others to work out.

However there is a wider point that the appropriate clothing needs to be worn for an activity and you can be sure that should an accident happen, insurers and H&S/police would look at whether clothing/attire contributed to the accident.
You wouldn't dream of using an axe barefoot and would only have yourself to blame when the inevitable happens. Similarly i would expect appropriate clothing for canoeing and in that aspect his complaint seems justified.

I think it was the language he used more than anything else.

For what it's worth, I think the DC over-reacted - if the BBC report is accurate (usual caveats apply).

Saying that, perhaps it was inevitable, sometimes there is no arguing with one-true-faith Christians - as I've learned in the past.

You can see what's driving the TSA from every photo they release, everyone must include as least one ethnic minority, one boy, one girl. They are scared out of their wits if they feature a picture of all boys, the sexist card will be played, and a photo with caucasian children it would illicit the race card. The vanilla road in the end appeals to no one, and tip toeing on eggshells means their eyes are off the ball of what really matters.

As an aside, I have seen swimwear that meets the religious requirements, so perhaps that can be worn whilst kayaking.

I think that uspide down with a wet cloth covering your face would be tantamount to self imposed waterboarding...

Not if a BA us worn over the top, it may be restrictive/tight but it would hold the material in place.

Not that it is ever going to arise, but there is absolutely no way I would allow it on one of my sessions. I couldn't care less about what religion people are, but I see it as a safety hazard and I would not accept responsibility for taking someone out who I thought was dressed in such a way that they created a hazard.

Can't imagine anyone of any devout faith comng to our Navs anyway...

I don't think it has a single thing to do with being labelled sexist, but simply that TSA is trying to build to perception of Scouting as an open organisation where everyone is welcome. In the national consciousness, scouting is still seen as a white, Christian, male, middle-class activity. To break that we have to continuously show ourselves as diverse and inclusive. Which is also why comments like the ones leading to this thread are taken so seriously.
