    The Price of Gas!

    Hello All,

Just a quick question, really. Where is the cheapest place to get decent quality paraffin for use with Tilley Lamps?

Last year, we made the decision to go back to Tilleys and away from Gas Lamps. Frankly, the price of campingaz bottles is extortionate, whereas 4l of paraffin from B & Q allowed us to keep 3 Tilleys going for a week of camping, all for £8. However, that still works out £2 per litre for paraffin, and I'm sure it's not meant to be more expensive than Petrol/Diesel, is it?

We still need to bring a big gas bottle with us to power the camping fridges (a newfound necessity for us when greenfield camping for a week!), but the savings and sheer pleasure of using our old Tilley lamps is fantastic. So, on a side-note, if you have any old Tilleys you want to get rid of, then let me know! If it helps, I'm based in Bournemouth & Oxford.

    Thanks all in advance,

    Faulkner

Oh, why did you have to ask? I've now got to get my primuses out and service them. Try Ebay for bulk quantities or look around for a traditional old style hardware store. A quick google shows some promising candidates in Poole.

Have you looked at http://www.findafuelsupplier.co.uk/paraffin-suppliers - though they may want to sell you 500 litres - but worth a try
or according to an old Money Saving Expert post I found said try local gardening / allotment society

Unfortunately, long gone are the days when you could go to your local 'petrol station' and get paraffin - we used to do that.

Nowadays it tends to be garden centres and hardware shops but as it is less used it probably works out quite expensive.

Our local petrol station sells paraffin still. Ok its in 5L containers all sealed up and ready to go not just filling up containers from a tank and its not the cheapest place to buy paraffin but its still a lot more convienient than having to go to a garden centre or hardware shop.

Our local garages sell 5litre "cans" of parafin. Maybe it is because we are semi-rural - but I think most of the farms have electricity now

We have a supplier near us, in Osset.

They use big tankers, but they have pumps outside and Iím sure Iíve seen people filing Jerry cans.

We've bought boxes of 4x5l bottles from garden centres before
they tend to call it something like greenhouse heater fuel
