    Creating a parallel Universe...

    Well, not quite.

Navigators are now running with regular membership across two sections. All great stuff. We cater for kids who don't want what is offered by Scouts and Guides. Kids who want to be out doing something positive with friends in a place of safety. Again, all good stuff. We are not into empire building as such. We would prefer mutual cooperation but in the absence of that we just do our own thing.

In an "outreach" programme we gained funding to ay two sports coaches to work with 7 - 10 years olds for two hours on a Friday in a Navigators sponsored sports session over 39 weeks.

This morning I met with the local youth services rep to discuss something for an older age range. We have premises, we have insurance, but the barrier will be getting local people involved to support it - none of our existing team will get involved. Youth Services will deal with DBS and basic training for volunteers, and they will manag the paid staff, if we get it off the ground.

Any ideas of how to get people involved in this parallell universe wuld be muchly welcomed.

    That is a toughy.

I think I'd probably start with people who were known to already have an interest, then perhaps run an open evening of some sort?

If you were able to choose the sport you do round the person you get (thinking that if you do get someone who's proper enthusiastic - but only about one sport), then you could build round that.

Kudos for trying. Although as you know yourself, with the continuing slow death of community, what you're trying to do will be even more difficult.

To be honest, this is a purely altruistic project. There has been a vacuum left by the withdrawal of YPS and I am willing to try and help others get something going, but if there is no demand and no support, then so be it.

The local sports clubs offer a fantastic provision - the local youth rugby club has over 200 members. There are six cricket clubs that I know of who all have full membership of their youth sections - oddly, the one sport that struggles is football - go figure.

But there area few kids who don't fit in any of the available slots - this would be for them.
