    Paddle Sport Stage 1 resources

    Hi

We take our Cubs kayaking at least once a year, but we have not been very structured about it and we have not covered the Paddle Sport Stage 1 badge. We do plenty enough on the water to cover the badge requirements but I would like to do a little bit extra off the water to complete the badge.

I was just wondering if anyone had any resources: e.g. quizes, word searches, posters etc. that might be used to help cover the off-water elements:

    Paddle Sports stage 1

    How to earn your badge:

Identify different types of paddle craft.
Name three places you could safely go canoeing or kayaking.
Take part in a warm up activity to prepare you for canoeing or kayaking. You could practice balancing whilst kneeling, getting in and out of a boat or practicing a paddling action.
Dress properly for your chosen activity. Show you know the importance of buoyancy aids and how to put one on correctly.

Take part in a taster session that covers:
naming equipment used and the parts of the boat
getting into and out of a boat safely
    balancing a boat
manoeuvring your boat in different directions, including moving forward.
There is one very simple quiz on OSM, but I have not found anything else.

    Many thanks

Don't know what access you have to equipment.

I would get three different boats - say a roundish hull, like a dancer, a flat hull like a burn or similar and maybe a sea kayak, or a playboat and go through the differences in them and how they might affect paddling.

I know it is a bit beyond the basics - but you can do some interesting dry stuff with throwlines.

I'd probably do a round robin question session and if people don't answer they still pick up from the responses from others (and your corrections/ clarifications)

I knocked up a worksheet for our Cubs earlier this year - PM me your email address if you'd like a copy to play around with.

Throw line olympics - set up targets that they have to hit with a throw line and race round them (assumes you have enough throw lines).
Split into teams and have a race to get the equipment needed for paddling (BA, helmet, spray deck, paddles etc), add extra kit that isn’t needed so they can’t just grad one of everything.
