Investing Young Leaders at the Group

Should we invest YLs in the section with which they are volunteering?

Is it different for those that are members of an ESU and for those that are not?

    I would suggest not.

That said, I'm assuming ES's are invested in to their unit anyway. I'm not sure what arrangements are made for YL ESU's.

I'm aware that Leaders can be invested. It's not something we do. And we've not done it with YL's either.

As a DESC, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. If they were a regular at a normal (ie. not a YL training unit) Explorer Unit they might get invested into the explorer unit too, but no matter. I wouldn't if they were just turning up for three months DofE volunteering, but if you want to, no rules against it.

Interesting.... I always invest Young Leaders. Also, I always invest all Leaders. They have to make their promise or how can they be Scouts?

I think it is good for the Beavers to see Adults being invested. It gives them something to aspire to.

    This

We always invested our leaders - they were a part of the group.

In the eyes of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, the Young leaders were Leaders. Yes there were things they couldn't do, yes they technically were part of the district ESU rather than the group, but they were invested the same as any other leader, and they wore a group necker (they were welcome to double up and wear their unit necker with it) when volunteering with the group.

That was the same regardless of whether they were active explorers or not, whether they were former members of the group or not. The only exception was on the occaision that we had external kids come in to do their DofE bronze volunteering who didnt become members and didnt wear the uniform - although most of those decided to stay on and join long term.

    Yep. Always
We make a bit of a thing about it and also present their jungle book leader badge at the same time.
It is good for Cubs to see YLs (as well as leaders) being invested

Why wouldn't you? it's a nice way for them to feel part of the section and for YP to see that as well. It's a nice thing to do for adults as well.

Being in an ESU or not should make no difference!
