I haven't ever been to the re-union - mainly because I don't know any other leaders from about here that go, and i'm always scared when I have to travel anywhere as I have a tendancy to get very, very lost (e.g. I once got the sleeper to London and ended up in Lands End - not a good idea at 3am in the morning!)

What sort of workshops/bases do they run? And what is the evening entertainment?

You really really can't get lost going to Gilwell!

The workshops and bases vary from year to year, but you can easily pick up a year's worth of programme ideas, and vent your frustrations at national commissioners.

Evening entertainment consists of the bar both nights, I think there's normally a barn dance or something similar in the Lid on the Friday. Saturday evening there is a disco in the Lid, and Fozzy's quiz in the main marquee. For the last 3 years (or more), Network also provide entertainment in their marquee in the training ground. In previous years, this has been a casino, and a race night. Next year is a children's tea party (its our 5th birthday), including [vodka] jelly and [baileys] ice cream!! (Normal jelly and ice cream will also be available, as we wouldn't want to be seen as encouraging drinking)

Yes - first went over ten years ago and then never returned until about 3 years since.

This year I took my 6 year old son - bit of father/son bonding.

The first time i went, I went on my own for one day. I travelled up from Hamsphire (not as far as you I know) and depsite the dire warnings of my hubby about the M25 and pulling over if I got tired etc (he says he loves me really) when I got there I found Gilwell relativley easily. It is a fair walk from the station if you were to go by rail but thats what taxis were invented for!
Actually at the site, the support staff were friendly and helpful and pointed me in the right direction. I found it a little intimidating to start off with, but I decided that we all had one thing in common and that was Scouting, so I bit the bullet and visited some stands and just started talking to people. Mentioned it was the first time I had been and I was off! I brought back some great ideas. The second time I went I took Akela with me for company and we stayed off site (Akela's hubby insisted!) and found the Holiday Express was very accomodating and cheap. We went for the 2 days and enjoyed ourselves, we went on the history tour (really interesting - especially the art work) and to the inauguration of the new Chief Scout. Definitely better with some-one I know well, didn't enjoy the second day as much as things were obviuosly different because of the event. We did meet up with people we knew from the County and I met people I had met when I went previously. We also brought back loads of ideas again and lots of leaflets!
We will be going again, I want to stay on site this time, but we may have to be careful how we play that one if you catch my drift!
After this long post, I guess what I am really saying is GO FOR IT! It is certainly an experience. Why not try and break the journey up a bit? Is a local cheap flight to london an option? That might stop you ending up in Lands End, but I guess you could end up in Europe instead!

I've never been (even though I live quite close). Do people turn up in the Gilwell scarf or is that just a thing you buy which then doesn't see the light of day?

And I've never seen why Gilwell is assocoiated with a spider! What's that all about anyone?

Glad I've got the scarf thing sorted! Any update on the arachnid?!

So what date is the reunion? Do you pay to just do a day visit? Don't you have to own woodbadges to get a warrant? Does it always rain? Is parking pants when Gilwell's busy? Where have all these questions come from?!

    Cheers.

(I should have gone on the webpage before asking my question)

Here are the answers to your questions
Its on the 7-9 September 2007.
Yes you have to pay for a day visit - £16
You don't need a woodbage to get a warrant (the warrant comes first)
    I guess it probably is
I guess they come from your brain

MikeJ, You've credited me with a brain-I'm forever grateful!

Actually yes a Gilwell Google search would have been a good idea. £16 for a day visit? OUCH!
