Haven't read that in ages actually. It is really rather good for the promotion of scouting.
    And I'm 15 now :] yay.

Is there an archive or list anywhere of articles that are scouting-related that I can have a look at?

I'm actually not, although I did want to be one... but there we go.
I seem to get in the news far more than anyone I know who is a ysp anyway :P.
I also seem to do more media-wise... spent 3 hours last night emailing every single local newspaper and television producers to try and get some media attention for our unit, especially our trip away in May.

Well done - sounds like you're doing well! :-)

There are a number of YSP all over the country that are doing really well - so please don't knock the system too much! :-P

Happened to notice it has been covered in the latest SAGA magazine whilst sitting in a waiting room!

I hasten to add at the grand old age of 21 this is not a normal habit of looking through saga, it was either that or some other obscure title!

I wasn't knocking it at all; merely saying that although I would have really liked to have been a ysp, and I'm not, I've still managed to do things as well.
Sorry if it seemed as if I was.

Had a reply back from the newspaper in Brighton [The Argus if any of you have heard of it] and it seems that they're interested in putting something together.
Which is great; the more positive publicity for scouting in its centenary year, the better.

    No worries Imogen! :-)

Good to hear that you're getting the local newspaper involved. If you need any help (which by the sounds of it, you don't need) then contact the media team at Gilwell and I'm sure they'll give you some facts or figures.

So have you got an MDM in your county or are you the unofficial MDM?

    What's an MDM?

And I contacted Fozzy at the Media Team; hoping he'll be able to pass the email I wrote onto the local televised-news. Hopefully one of them will want to feature us, and possibly even our May trip abroad.

Oops sorry - an MDM is a Media Development Manager.

It is a county role and the person is responsible for making links with the press and publicising Scouting (what you're doing...lol)

The only reason I say this is that if you have got an MDM, it might be an idea to run ideas past him as well...

I think it might be Ben Richardson.
He certainly does all the local stuff.

If you saw the 'When We Were Scouts' show, he's the guy that was our 'scout leader', not that he's actually our leader - he's just had all the media training that was really needed.

I've left more or less all of this on our WSJ Contingent forum [www.jamboforum.co.uk if you want to take a look and sign our guestbook], and he has a log on to that, so I think he'll read it when he next logs on.

But yeh, I'll have a word with him, see if he can lend a hand.
But I do rather enjoy doing this... sort of the area I want to work in when 'I grow up' [not that I ever will 'grow up' :P].

An article in our local paper the Yorkshire Evening Post about our County's Centenary Parade held on Sunday http://www.thisisleeds.co.uk/news?articleid=2722079
there are some glaring factual and typographical errors but over all it is a good positive piece

This year our usual St georges day parade was replaced with a day at Alon Towers, and it was reported in the local Derby evening telegraph here

    Bedfordshire County Camp

    Media reports

    100 Years of Scouting

A huge scouting event has been taking place over the last four days.

We went along for the closing ceremony and it was brilliant. There were approximately 2000 scouts from all over Bedfordshire and they were celebrating 100 years of scouting. They had a carnival type finale with everyone from each group having to dress up. The theme was "around the world" and people had really pushed the boat out. There were full-scale chinese dragons and a particularly good looking bunch of Mexicans that caught my eye, who turned out to be Dunstable district explorers ably led by a friendly chap called Tom.

    Picture gallery 2

Gaz also managed to get on the closing ceremony stage and led a chorus of 2000 scouts and helpers, parents, instructors, first aiders in a rendition of "Ging Gang Gooley". Gaz said he was trying to break a world record.
After the closing ceremony I was pressed ganged by loads of scouts, instructors and parents to do a "Danger Babs" activity. Against my better Judgement and with a bit of arm bending from John Dooley, the County Commisioner, I was harnessed up. Before I could say "Dib Dib Dib" I was attempting to abseil down a 30ft sheer drop. I found out that Gaz had set this up and as usual I he found the whole thing very amusing. I went over the edge with John and all the support from the scouts below who were brilliant, there must have been at least 100 people watching and spurring me on and I must say thanks in particular to Katy who held my hand and calmed me down at the bottom and to Richard who talked me down from the top. Listen to the abseil audio here

We were invited to help celebrate all things scouting by Kam Patel, District Commissioner Someries (Luton) District Scouts and we had a brilliant day out. Thanks so much.
Kam also said if there are volunteers who want to help out, please contact your local scout group or log onto the National Scouts Association website

I beleive there was other coverage on local TV as well

I spotted a rather good full page on Scouting in 2007 in "Metro", that (unlike much of the other stuff in there) was actually a very good read, and very positive about the SA.

I however cannot find it on their website. Perhaps someone else can find the link??
