Favourite Joomla Extensions?

    Hi all,

My first post on escouts - I made the mistake of confessing to a meagre amount of technical knowledge at our last committee meeting and now find myself landed with the task of looking after our website!!

So, I'm now the proud owner of a Shiny New Joomla site, looking much like every other SNJS except for Richard Fairbairns template - many thanks.

And so I thought I'd seek the opinions of you no doubt hardened and grizzled scout webmasters out there. Does anybody have any favourite/loathed extensions to Joomla that lend themselves to the business of running a Scouts' website?

I've used eventcal before, so that gets my vote for a decent calendar: http://forge.joomla.org/sf/projects/eventcal

And if you fancy a snigger, here's the fledgling site's URL: http://www.1sthelsbyscouts.org.uk

    Welcome to :escouts:

the main thing you need is content you have a good start but have a look around at others groups web sites to get an idea of what your group want from the your group site.

On our site I think the only stuff we've got installed are events, easy gallery, and joomboard, all of which I get one ok with. IMO it's important to match your needs to your components etc...

What I want to do is put in a private listing of activities that are only visible to registered users, and maybe a photo gallery of past events.

Anyone any experience of relevant modules?

There must be a Joomla extension that does something like that, don't know of any, but there must be (This feature is built into CMScout, but thats not the point here).

I'm sure you can install a normal calendar extension and just limit access to it to registered users?

Well, yes and no, at present, (Version 1.0.x) you cannot restrict access to an entire component, however as of 1.5 (Currently RC3, so almost perfectly safe to use *prepares to be told that it isn't, but I trust it*) you can!

At the moment uyou can make menu items invisible to non-registered users, but someone who understood the system would have no problem in seeing it.

True I could add a normal calendar and gallary extension, this was my intention.

I was more after a recommendation on which ones as there are loads!

    that looks right to me...

the gallery...where will your photos be hosted? if its on the server i would recommend getting something like Flickr or one of the other many photo sites out there....that way you can keep your bandwidth down and use the extension designed for that site...
