    Lightbulb scouting PenPals??

    Hi!
just got started with escouts, back around February time, when i was waiting for my warrant, which has now thankfully arrived, then had all sorts of PC problems. so starting again.
I'm not sure of the best place for this question, so i thought i'd try here.

I run a Beaver colony and we are about to to start our friendship challenge. Part of it is learning anout other people/ countries. And as it's Centenary year (Did anyone notice that?) i thought i'd be a cool idea to get in touch with some Beavers from another country.

only snag is i haven't the foggiest how to do it. so any pointers very welcome.

    Cheers

I am from America and we do not have Beavers here, and I know other countries call them other things as well. You may want to start by searching by age instead of level name.

Second, I recommend you spend some time chatting with Scouters and Scouts from all over the world. After you have talked to them, you will know where they are and if they would be the right type to help you. The best Scouting chat room that I know of is http://scoutlink.net. This is an IRC based chat that is moderated and safe for all. If you don't know anything about chat go to http://insanescouter.com/chat/ where you will find a easy to use web based chat that links to ScoutLink. If I am on you will find me generally as Peeves or InsaneScouter.

The other thing you can try is to use google to search for a group in another country and email them through their website.

Hope my wacky 2 cents uh pence helps...

    Hiya Robin,

Try doing a search on this subject as there was a thread started recentky so all the info should be fresh.

Not all countries (as isane scouter touched upon) have Beavers and if you want English langauge it does cut it down again.

When I was with the Beaver section I tried the penpals scheme on Scoutbase, again there's not many groups on there.

Like insane of the US says, try and scope world websites. I got mine by finding an online Aussie Scouting newsletter and getting an ad placed.

It's worth it, getting and sending packages is very satisfying.
The Outdoor Traditionalist (a largely bushcraft blog). Have a look at this how to page for things to try.

There used to be a well known scheme for pairing up Scouts as penpals, and people used to be discouraged from setting up their own links.

It's best to go through the international links scheme.
