    New Chief Scout Award Certificates

    Hi Peter

Thank you for responding to Kastor's query on the new certificates. We were both of one mind when they were introduced, and I have done the same as Kastor - stocked up on the old style certificates.

This is a copy of an exchange of emails I had with Chris Nagle at Gilwell on the subject back in June:

    Hi Info Centre

I am afraid that, for the first time, I am sending a very critical
comment to the SA. I would appreciate you forwarding it to the
    appropriate person.

As Acting GSL and CSL I have recently awarded two Chief Scout's Silver
Awards to my Cubs, and I was horrified by the new certificate design.
However, I took the plunge with them anyway. Both boys were embarrassed
by the certificate, and refused to show it to their fellow Scouts
because it was so childish. In my opinion it is appropriate for the
Bronze Award for Beavers, if that. When the children have undertaken a
serious Challenge to achieve the Award, they don't want to receive a
cartoon fit for a 5 year old - they want a certificate!

I have now seen the Beaver Bronze Award certificate, and I am horrified by that. It resembles a certificate that my son was awarded at swimming lessons at age 3!

I truly hope that the SA can withdraw these dreadful designs as soon as
possible and replace them with something that the children will be proud
to show their friends and put on their bedroom wall.

In the meantime I will be producing my own design of certificates for
    the children in our Group.

    Regards

    Hello Penny

Thank you for your comments about the new style Cub Scout Certificates.
All the images came from the Cub Scout Webpages, and before they where
published, we showed them to a number of experienced leaders for their
views. This is the first negative comment that we have received - and I
am surprised that a 10 year old sees them as childish. They follow a
theme and provide the cub section with a clear identity built around the
concept of Cub Island. We will research further into this - and I will
look to see if other Packs feel they are too childish for the Section.

The response we have had to date has been positive rather than negative
    - but thank you for letting us know what you think.

    Regards

    Chris

I am afraid that I still hold to my original opinion - the new certificates are really poor for the relevant age ranges. My SL and BSL feel the same way. The new designs may have been shown to "experienced Leaders" but were they shown to children as well? "Experienced Leaders" have a way of getting out of touch with what children find "cool", I'm afraid.

Thanks for your input on all our questions. I am very glad to see that the Chief Scout is willing to debate with the grass roots and even go out on a limb occasionally when a really good idea comes along!

    Kind regards
    Penny E

Penny when did you send in your complaint about them? Just wondering as I sent an email to the Info Centre around the 20th March complaining about the Bronze Award certificate so I am suprised they claimed yours was the first complaint they had received

I honestly can't think how they can have had a positive response to them as they are truly awful.

Just read the email response I got sent by Info Centre on 21st March and it says my email was passed on to Chris Nagle who is the person who responded to your email. So either my email was not actually passed on to him or he took so little notice of it that he didn't even remember my complaint when he replied to yours

I sent my email to the info centre on the 1st March and received their auto-reply the same day.

I received no further response to the email so I assume there was a "communication breakdown" at Gilwell or someone is not telling the whole truth....

Admittedly I was complaining about the Beaver certificates and Penny was complaining about the Cub ones but even so.

As I've just moved to Cubs I thought I'd have a look at the certificates. I guess they are OK for those just joining but I agree that the silver award and the moving on one are not suitable for someone at the older end of the Cub spectrum.

its probably best to do a search on the scout shops web page, http://www.scoutshops.com/ as did search but it gave me loads of links - too many to put a link too.

    Beaver one

    Cub one

Remember that the Beaver one is effectively going to be given to a Cub and the Cub one to a Scout.

    Oooooh Myyyyy!

    That is awful.

But, if you go to http://www.sbuk.org.uk/info.centre/catalog.php and enter "award signed" in the search box you will find some better "official" certificates - do we have a case of two different versions, one trash and one OK with Gillwell only seeing the latter?

Me thick - why are they still advertising them then?

Seriously, if the information centre doesn't have the latest version how are mere mortals meant to know which is theo correct version?

They probably have old stock, wanting people to buy them so they can then only have 1 version.
