Subs - What do you charge?

While reading another thread, I realised that other groups seem to be charging rather more than we are. We charge £20 a term - therefore £60 a year. What do others charge per term? (Poll attached).
    Cheers,
    Jonathan.

Our Explorer unit has charged £25 per term (£75 per year) for about 4 years now, our partnered Scout Group increased its subs from £20 to £25 a term last year. I don't think one single parent had a problem with the increase as they are still getting a bargain at that price. Both lots of subs include the annual membership fee and cover Leaders' membership fees one way or another.

We pay £2 weekly at the moment, but hopefully this will change to per term very soon.

I'm watching this thread with interest to see what we should maybe charge.

Dont base it off of what others do - you ought to sit down and figure out all the income that you must have come in to pay capitation insurance etc.
Then raise it to cover the costs of running the evenings.

    Yeap, understand what you're saying.

It's so I can have some stats. if people say we're asking too much.

I totally agree - and that, of course is what we do. It is just nice to have some ammo to fire when the AGM happens next month and the usual suspects moan about the cost for their offspring!!

We're looking at ours but have to consider what the other Scout Group charge as we both use the same building.

Of course, some might include AMS in the subs, and some might not, artificially raising or lowering the subs, depending on your point of view.

    (£35 a term, including AMS)

i do not understand groups who complicate matters with an extra charge in january for capitation... we charge X per year... so X/3 per term. and that is what we need to get through the year...

We don't charge them a buildings and contents surcharge, and that would £17/ member if we wanted to... it is all one cost...

Yeah must admit I agree one simple charge 3 times a year seems much easier than having to get an extra membership payment out of people

I think it is key that people remember that some people include Capitation, some do not, and charge it seperately.

It also depends on how much your building costs to upkeep, how much any rent is etc, electricity and all that.

Comparing a group which has a large rental charge, and one which has a small one is hardly much of a comparision.

It also depends on how much fundraising the group does etc

Yeah, I hadn't considered the costs of owning your own building. We pay a relatively nominal £500 rent a year to the Church whose halls we meet in (they are our Group's sponsors). If we had to pay upkeep and utilities bills on our own Scout Hut I'd imagine we would probably have much higher subs

I think the programme also effect the rates you charge - we are a Sea Scout group and as well as the cost of maintaing and heating our building and the grounds, we have a minibus to run, three ribs, numerous kayaks and some dingys.... all these need insurance so our fees are higher as are our out goings....

Also in this we have to consider the amount of fundraising the group does... our does very little at the moment as no one wants to coordinate it....

You'll also find that term at Cubs/Scouts is a lot cheaper than swimming, football etc.....If the kids are enjoying themselves the parents are happy to pay. But I think everyone tries to keep Scouting as affordable as possible.
