    Important Information

We have received the following message and felt it was appropriate to post this announcement because of:

    • The issues with the site
    • The warning about letting domains expire.
We hope the Group get issue sorted soon.

I am aware that some Groups had links from their own sites to that of the 64th Birkenhead, that is 64thseascouts.org.uk, and that others referred their Scouts to some of our site's content and resources.

Please remove all such links and stop recommending youth members access this site immediately. Indeed please stop accessing this site altogether.

We have taken OUR site off line, however, the domain name has been taken over (we believe from somewhere in Russia) and some of our material re-published under that name. The home page appears to be is as it was, as does some of the content, but some material is missing and many links have been changed!

Some of the links from this site are now totally unsuitable for youth members.

The 64th Birkenhead Sea Scout Group is working to have the site removed.

I apologise if any of you have visited or recommended this site recently.

If your Group has its own site or is considering establishing one, please be aware of the potential problems should you ever close it down.

    Yours in Scouting,

    Matthew

    Sea Scout Leader

    That is scary.

At first, I thought what's the problem here, then I saw some of the links.

They've obviously got some cached data and published on your old domain. The implementation is a bit scabby, even quite puerile, but nontheless not welcome.

Hope you get it sorted chaps.

    A warning to us all.

    A waring to us all.
There was one that changed hands a few years ago that was Scouting then became very adult.

I never ceases to amaze me how many spammers try and fail to get membership of this board.

Registering a domain, uploading the old content from a cache and changing some links, is in another sad league entirely.

Not something I had ever considered as an issue, but having checked up on an old business site I used to have I find that the .co.uk domain name is now a Polish online directory.

I guess the moral of this story is that before youi take a domain name as a Scout Group, etc., you really, really need to be sure that you will be making a long term commitment to the domain.

I think it is awful personally as I would be utterly angry and upset.
Whilst I think it's totally disgraceful to do such a thing - I can't seem to notice what is innapropriate about the website.

Sorry for being a bit thick here but which links are bad? None seem obvious to me.
We only have 2 rules in our group:
    Rule 1 - I'm the Boss and
Rule 2 - if in doubt refer to Rule #1

Puzeled you couldn't see the problem I just pulled it up to look again. The links along the bottom have changed since this was first pointed out.
Having seen what was there earlier I wouldn't open them as goodnes knows what would come up ?!

It would appear the person who now owns the domain hasn't obmitted his details from : http://www.whois-search.com/whois/ww...ascouts.org.uk

Can't someone contact them saying if they don't remove all the scouting content we will take legal action or something along those lines to scare them?

the footer has changed recently, used to have more explicit adds! May be a reaction to some complaints or they may just change depending on revenue

I think the ads are random. How about trying to contact the hosting company.

Yeah the best bet is to contact dreamhost (the hosting company) and get the account terminated.. dreamhost are uk based and a respectable company so I expect they would be happy to work with you on this..

Or contacting Nominet it's a .org.uk site - I think you could get the domain back without any difficulties

if it was a .com or .net then nearly impossible to get back

.uk - Nominet are very good
